Oasis – TOP21-songs: 6 – AcquiesceOasis – TOP21-biisit: 6 – Acquiesce

Originally released as a B-side to Some Might Say (1995). Can be found on the album The Masterplan (1998).

This song’s one of the first conceptions of this band. It was the beginning of the summer of 2006 and I was driving with my brother Ilkka towards Uimaharju and a small-scale sports-day (meaning playing some tennis and maybe doing some track & field). Just when we came to Uimaharju’s roundabout we put The Masterplan to CD-drive. That album starts with Acquiesce.

The song’s lyrics were about things that a boy who just had got to mature age of 14 had never heard anyone sing about. Neither had any band sounded like Oasis on this song.

Both of the Gallagher-brothers sing in this one (that’s rare!) because Noel claims Liam was in a bar during the recording of the refrains. However, the alternation gives this song a certain dimension.

“I don’t know what it is
That makes me feel alive
I don’t know how to wake
The things that sleep inside
I only wanna see the light
That shines behind your eyes

I hope that I can say
The things I wish I’d said
To sing my soul to sleep
And take me back to bed
You want to be alone
When we could be alive instead

Because we need each other
We believe in one another
And I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
Because we need each other
We believe in one another
(And) I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
What’s sleepin’ in our soul

There are many things
That I would like to know
And there are many places
That I wish to go
But everything’s depending
On the way the wind may blow
I don’t know what it is
That makes me feel alive
I don’t know how to wake
The things that sleep inside
I only wanna see the light
That shines behind your eyes

Because we need each other
We believe in one another
And I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
Because we need each other
We believe in one another
(And) I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
What’s sleepin’ in our soul”

Juuri Uimaharjun kiertoliittymän kohdalla iskettiin soimaan The Masterplan, jonka avausbiisinä on Acquiesce.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 7 – Cigarettes & AlcoholOasis – TOP21-biisit: 7 – Cigarettes & Alcohol

From the album Definitely Maybe (1994).

“You can wait for a lifetime / to spend your days in the sunshine / you might as well do the white line / ‘cause when it comes on top / YOU GOTTA MAKE IT HAPPEN!”

Top-seiska onkin sitten pelkkää mahtavuutta käynnistyen ensilevyn rokilla.

Top7 is pure greatness starting with rock’n’roll from the debut album.

”Is it my imagination or have I finally found something worth living for / I was looking for some action but all I found was cigarettes and alcohol”. At it’s simplicity the ambigous opening line is rock-poetry at it’s best. When the package is flavoured with young men playing presumptously and, most of all, Liam’s vocal performance (which rumbles!) we’ve got a magnificent song in our hands.

Alun kitarariffissä lainataan surutta T. Rexin Get it Onia eikä sävellys muutenkaan mitään progea ole: kolmea sointua vähän järjestystä muutellen. Tästä on rokkenrollissa kyse!

The opening guitar riff borrows recklessly from T. Rex’s Get it On and the composition isn’t proge otherwise: just three chords slightly trading places at times. This is what rock’n’roll is about!

The album version can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojgg0Bnyg54

Personally I prefer the version played on Wembley Stadium in 2000 when both Gallagher brothers get to act like rock stars in a magnificent way. The highlight is the moment after 1 minute and 40 seconds, when Noel jumps on top of the speakers, starts the song’s opening riff and 80 000 people go nuts. Liam’s adrenaline boost shows at 5 minute mark, when the man whips his tambourine to the microphone after finishing his singing. And adding some Whole Lotta Love in the outro isn’t bad either. A great, rocking song!

”Is it my imagination or have I finally found something worth living for / I was looking for some action but all I found was cigarettes and alcohol”. Yksinkertaisuudessaan monitulkinnallinen avausrivi on jo rock-runoutta parhaimmillaan.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 8 – Don’t Go AwayOasis – TOP21-biisit: 8 – Don’t Go Away

From the album Be Here Now (1997).

From Bere Here Now comes to prominence a track that could well be from the previous (WTS)MG-album. Noel knew how to churn out this kind of love songs in the 90s. This one is also perhaps the greatest vocal performance of Liam’s career. Man himself has admitted that he bursted into tears during the recording session. He didn’t tell the reason, however…

The stale sounds of the BHN-album don’t quite reach this song. There’s no overmuch distorted guitars and the acoustic ones can be heard clearly. Also the lyrics don’t contain special words, but the wholeness is magnificent. Noel has told he wrote the song for his mother.

Bridge, loppupuolella kertosäkeiden välissä kuultava 8 tahtia, lainaa jälleen Oasista itseään tuttujen kitaralinjojen muodossa. “Me and you, what’s going on? / All we seem to know is how to show / the feelings that are wrong”. Lopetuksessakin on jotain hienoa.

Bridge, the 8-measures-long-part that can be heard towards the end of the song, borrows again from Oasis itself with it’s familiar guitar fills. “Me and you, what’s going on? / All we seem to know is how to show / the feelings that are wrong”. The ending of this song ain’t bad either…

If Don’t Go Away doesn’t hit your sensory nerves then what does…?

Cold and frosty morning – there’s not a lot to say
About the things caught in my mind.
And as the day was dawning my plane flew away
With all the things caught in my mind.

And I wanna be there when you’re coming down
And I wanna be there when you hit the ground

So don’t go away,
Say what you say
Say that you’ll stay
Forever and a day
In the time of my life
’cause I need more time,
Yes, I need more time
Just to make things right

Damn my situation and the games I have to play
With all the things caught in my mind.
Damn my education – I can’t find the words to say
With all the things caught in my mind.

And I wanna be there when you’re coming down
And I wanna be there when you hit the ground

So don’t go away,
Say what you say
Say that you’ll stay
Forever and a day
In the time of my life
’cause I need more time,
Yes, I need more time
Just to make things right

Me and you – what’s going on?
All we seem to know is how to show
The feelings that are wrong.

[x2]
So don’t go away,
Say what you say
Say that you’ll stay
Forever and a day
In the time of my life
’cause I need more time,

Yes, I need more time
Just to make things right

Yes, I need more time

Albumilta Be Here Now (1997).

Be Here Now-levyltä paljastuu raita, joka voisi hyvinkin olla edeltävältä (WTS)MG-albumilta. Noel osasi 90-luvulla suoltaa tällaisia rakkauslauluja useammankin. Kyseessä on ehkä Liamin uran hienoin laulusuoritus.

Noel on kertonut kirjoittaneensa laulun äidilleen.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 9 – I’m Outta TimeOasis – TOP21-biisit: 9 – I’m Outta Time

From the album Dig Out Your Soul (2008).

A song from the last record, Dig Out Your Soul’s jewel. Written by Liam, I’m Outta Time is his most beautiful song. It sounds a lot like John Lennon and it doesn’t impair the image that there’s a snippet of his interview in the end of the song. It was originally found from Gem Archer’s archives.

I’m Outta Time is a simple, british-sounding composition. There’s no unnecessary repeatition: the structure is, in it’s simplicity: intro-verse-chorus-solo-chorus-outro. Even Noel has praised this song.

There’s a similarity in the feel of this song and the previous one (Where Did It All Go Wrong?), but this one’s more optimistic. It’s chorus (at start of which Liam almost gets to sing in falsetto voice) is presentable Oasis-ballad.

From this point on there’s no business to this list with songs from the 00s. Top8 is pure greatness…

La la la la la [x4]

Here’s a song
It reminds me of when we were young
Looking back at all the things we’ve done
You gotta keep on keepin’ on

Out to sea
Is the only place I honestly
Can get myself some piece of mind
You know it’s getting hard to fly

[x3]
If I’m to fall
Would you be there to applaud
Or would you hide behind them all
Because If I am to go
In my heart you grow
And that’s where you belong

Yes I’m out of time
I’m out of time
I’m out of time
I’m out of time
I’m out of time”

Albumilta Dig Out Your Soul (2008).

Jopa Noel on kehunut tätä veljensä tekemää teosta.

Tässä tunnelmassa on hyvin paljon samaa edellisellä sijalla olleen Where Did It All Go Wrongin kanssa, mutta tämä yksilö on optimistisempi. Kertosäe (jonka aluksi Liam nostaa lähes falsettiin) on mallikas Oasis-balladi.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 10 – Where Did It All Go Wrong?Oasis – TOP21-biisit: 10 – Where Did It All Go Wrong?

Albumilta Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000).

Noel keeps on singing. This one’s a hidden gem on the album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000) and the song was never released as a single. It was also very rarely played live. Noel at his best.

The song’s title is high-sounding and the atmosphere is set even before a single note is played: Where Did It All Go Wrong. The album in which this song was first released is at times pretty trippy so this song’s more traditional rock-ballad-style sounds refreshing also in the bigger picture.

The composition is solid. Noel’s vocal melody goes just on the tracks in which Noel as a singer is at his own range and gets to create bitter and wistful tones, because the text is exactly like that.

Where Did It All Go Wrong gets often left aside from many lists because it’s recessed in an album one rarely gets back to. I think the song deserves a chance. There’s something great in this individual’s feel.

“You know that feeling you get
You feel you’re older than time
You ain’t exactly sure
If you’ve been away a while

Do you keep the receipts
For the friends that you buy
And ain’t it bittersweet
You were only just getting by

But I hope you know
That it won’t let go
It sticks around with you until the day you die
And I hope you know that it’s touch and go
I hope the tears don’t stain the world that waits outside
Where did it all go wrong?

And until you’ve repaid
The dreams you bought for your lies
You’ll be cast away
Alone under the stormy skies

But I hope you know
That it won’t let go
It sticks around with you until the day you die
And I hope you know that it’s touch and go
I hope the tears don’t stain the world that waits outside
Where did it all go wrong”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZlfuNwzQdUAlbumilta Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000).

Noel jatkaa tulkintojaan. Vuoden 2000 Standing on the Shoulder of Giantsin kadotettu helmi, jota ei julkaistu singlenä eikä soitettu keikoilla. Noelia omimmillaan.

Jo biisin nimi on komealta kalskahtava ja tunnelma käy selväksi ennenkuin nuottiakaan on soitettu: Where Did It All Go Wrong. SotSoG-levy, jolla tämä alunperin julkaistiin, on paikka paikoin melkoista trippailua, joten tämän biisin perinteisempi rock-balladi-meininki kuulostaa albumikokonaisuudessakin miellyttävältä.

Sävellys on tasaisen varma. Melodia kulkee juuri niitä ratoja, joissa Noel on laulajana omimmillaan ja saa aikaan katkeranhaikeita sävyjä. Teksti nimittäin on juuri sellainen.

Tämä jää varmasti monelta Oasis-diggariltakin huomaamatta, sillä on upotettu sellaiselle levylle johon harvemmin tulee palattua. Kannattaa antaa mahdollisuus. Tämän laulun ilmapiirissä on jokin aika suuri mahti.
