Oasis – TOP21-songs: 2 – The MasterplanOasis – TOP21-biisit: 2 – The Masterplan

Originally released on the B-side of Wonderwall (1995). Can be found on the album The Masterplan (1998).

Only Oasis from the 90s can leave a song like this to B-side of a single and not put it on an album at all. The lyrics might be Noel’s best and when the song’s flavoured with upstanding horn- and string sections, backwards-played guitars and a beautiful melody we’ve got quite a piece.

The song goes on in A-minor and the atmospheres almos mystical in the intro and verse.

Noel’s text deals with basic things, philosophies that help you with whatever you come up with in life. Sisters and brothers go where they go, sing whatever they sing and dance when they feel like dancing: at the end we’re just a part of a bigger picture. And ““everything that’s been has passed”. Simple as that.

On the other hand “all we know is that we don’t know how’s it’s gonna be”. That line can be conceived in two, excellently dissenting ways: the melody and chiefly the small break in it gives it a chance. Either

All we know is that we don’t know how it’s gonna be” OR “All we know is that we don’t know. How it’s gonna be?”

The Masterplan had quite a fight over the first spot. This time it humbled itself because of the personal bindings and feelings. As a song this one’s not at all weaker than what’s coming on on number 1.

And think about it: this didn’t find it’s way to any studio album. A music video was made for this in 2006 but I think this has to be seen through your mind’s eye as pictures evoked by the music.

Take the time to make some sense
Of what you want to say
And cast your words away upon the waves
Sail them home with acquiesce
On a ship of hope today
And as they land upon the shore
Tell them not to fear no more

Say it loud and sing it proud today

And then dance if you wanna dance
Please brother take a chance
You know they’re gonna go
Which way they wanna go
All we know is that we don’t know
How it’s gonna be
Please brother let it be
Life on the other hand
Won’t make us understand
We’re all part of the masterplan

Say it loud and sing it proud today…

I’m not saying right is wrong
It’s up to us to make
The best of all the things that come our way
’Cause everything that’s been has passed
The answer’s in the looking glass
There’s four and twenty million doors
On life’s endless corridor

Say it loud and sing it proud today.

Well, dance if they want to dance
Please brother take a chance
You know they’re gonna go
Which way they wanna go
All we know is that we don’t know
How it’s gonna be
Please, brother, let it be
Life on the other hand
Won’t make you understand
We’re all part of the masterplan”

Julkaistu alunperin Wonderwall-singlen B-puolella (1995). Löytyy myös albumilta The Masterplan (1998).

Noelin teksti on perusasioiden äärellä. Sellaisten filosofioiden, joiden pohjalta on hyvä lähteä ihan mihin vaan. Ja “everything that’s been has passed”. Yksinkertaista.

Toisaalta myös “all we know is that we don’t know how’s it’s gonna be”. Joko

All we know is that we don’t know how it’s gonna be” tai “All we know is that we don’t know. How it’s gonna be?”
