Oasis – TOP21-songs: 9 – I’m Outta TimeOasis – TOP21-biisit: 9 – I’m Outta Time

From the album Dig Out Your Soul (2008).

A song from the last record, Dig Out Your Soul’s jewel. Written by Liam, I’m Outta Time is his most beautiful song. It sounds a lot like John Lennon and it doesn’t impair the image that there’s a snippet of his interview in the end of the song. It was originally found from Gem Archer’s archives.

I’m Outta Time is a simple, british-sounding composition. There’s no unnecessary repeatition: the structure is, in it’s simplicity: intro-verse-chorus-solo-chorus-outro. Even Noel has praised this song.

There’s a similarity in the feel of this song and the previous one (Where Did It All Go Wrong?), but this one’s more optimistic. It’s chorus (at start of which Liam almost gets to sing in falsetto voice) is presentable Oasis-ballad.

From this point on there’s no business to this list with songs from the 00s. Top8 is pure greatness…

La la la la la [x4]

Here’s a song
It reminds me of when we were young
Looking back at all the things we’ve done
You gotta keep on keepin’ on

Out to sea
Is the only place I honestly
Can get myself some piece of mind
You know it’s getting hard to fly

[x3]
If I’m to fall
Would you be there to applaud
Or would you hide behind them all
Because If I am to go
In my heart you grow
And that’s where you belong

Yes I’m out of time
I’m out of time
I’m out of time
I’m out of time
I’m out of time”

Albumilta Dig Out Your Soul (2008).

Jopa Noel on kehunut tätä veljensä tekemää teosta.

Tässä tunnelmassa on hyvin paljon samaa edellisellä sijalla olleen Where Did It All Go Wrongin kanssa, mutta tämä yksilö on optimistisempi. Kertosäe (jonka aluksi Liam nostaa lähes falsettiin) on mallikas Oasis-balladi.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 10 – Where Did It All Go Wrong?Oasis – TOP21-biisit: 10 – Where Did It All Go Wrong?

Albumilta Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000).

Noel keeps on singing. This one’s a hidden gem on the album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000) and the song was never released as a single. It was also very rarely played live. Noel at his best.

The song’s title is high-sounding and the atmosphere is set even before a single note is played: Where Did It All Go Wrong. The album in which this song was first released is at times pretty trippy so this song’s more traditional rock-ballad-style sounds refreshing also in the bigger picture.

The composition is solid. Noel’s vocal melody goes just on the tracks in which Noel as a singer is at his own range and gets to create bitter and wistful tones, because the text is exactly like that.

Where Did It All Go Wrong gets often left aside from many lists because it’s recessed in an album one rarely gets back to. I think the song deserves a chance. There’s something great in this individual’s feel.

“You know that feeling you get
You feel you’re older than time
You ain’t exactly sure
If you’ve been away a while

Do you keep the receipts
For the friends that you buy
And ain’t it bittersweet
You were only just getting by

But I hope you know
That it won’t let go
It sticks around with you until the day you die
And I hope you know that it’s touch and go
I hope the tears don’t stain the world that waits outside
Where did it all go wrong?

And until you’ve repaid
The dreams you bought for your lies
You’ll be cast away
Alone under the stormy skies

But I hope you know
That it won’t let go
It sticks around with you until the day you die
And I hope you know that it’s touch and go
I hope the tears don’t stain the world that waits outside
Where did it all go wrong”

Noel jatkaa tulkintojaan. Vuoden 2000 Standing on the Shoulder of Giantsin kadotettu helmi, jota ei julkaistu singlenä eikä soitettu keikoilla. Noelia omimmillaan.

Jo biisin nimi on komealta kalskahtava ja tunnelma käy selväksi ennenkuin nuottiakaan on soitettu: Where Did It All Go Wrong. SotSoG-levy, jolla tämä alunperin julkaistiin, on paikka paikoin melkoista trippailua, joten tämän biisin perinteisempi rock-balladi-meininki kuulostaa albumikokonaisuudessakin miellyttävältä.

Sävellys on tasaisen varma. Melodia kulkee juuri niitä ratoja, joissa Noel on laulajana omimmillaan ja saa aikaan katkeranhaikeita sävyjä. Teksti nimittäin on juuri sellainen.

Tämä jää varmasti monelta Oasis-diggariltakin huomaamatta, sillä on upotettu sellaiselle levylle johon harvemmin tulee palattua. Kannattaa antaa mahdollisuus. Tämän laulun ilmapiirissä on jokin aika suuri mahti.

#7 in US-albumchart, #2 in UK’s.

When I was already accustomed to the fact that Radiohead’s case can’t expect any of the usual, I was able to take this album with an open mind.

Ghost covers of King of Limbs are great, and the album is visually nice to own. Band’s activity are often strange, but the sound is always top notch. Understanding the album takes a lot of time, but so did the recordings. The album was recorded over three years. A coherent whole has to been challenging to get.

Every single one of Radiohead’s albums are at first sight strange clinking, creaking and eccentric song structures. So it is now. Effervescence of sounds is confusing. I have not seen the band live. Still, I appreciate the fact that they play themselves parts which sounds machines and computers. Certainly, there are samples used, but such as From The Basement-serie can be shown, they have skills.

”Every single one of Radiohead’s albums are at first sight strange clinking, creaking and eccentric song structures.”

Basically the band trusted a lot Thom Yorke’s voice and repeating. Although Radiohead has always been (probably also in the future will be) Yorke’s band, the other musicians must be totally mad too, because they produce this kind of material.

Yorke is an extremely talented singer. His vocal style and his voice just happens to be such that they are either hated or loved.

The album surrenders best through the good headphones. Go to café, sit down, put your headphones on and take a look at the bleakness of everyday life. It’s ideal for this.

Morning Mr MagpieExciting guitar riff takes you immediately in.
Lotus Flower – Vocal melody, which is strengthen nicely by bass line.

Albumi on nauhoiteltu kolmen vuoden aikana. Ehjän kokonaisuuden saaminen noin pitkällä aikajänteellä on luultavimmin haastavaa. Siinä bändi on onnistunut hyvin.

Pulputusta on moneen lähtöön. Varmasti siellä on samplejakin käytetty, mutta kuten esimerkiksi From The Basement-sarjassa on nähtävissä, soittotaitoa löytyy.

Yorke on äärimmäisen lahjakas laulaja.

Parhaiten levy antautuu kunnon kuulokkeiden kautta. Eli luurit päähän, sadesäällä kahvikuppilaan istumaan ja katsomaan arjen ankeutta. Siihen tämä sopii.

PARHAAT HETKET
Morning Mr MagpieJännittävä kitarariffi vie heti sisään kappaleeseen.
Lotus Flower – Laulumelodia, jota ytimekäs bassolinja hienosti vahvistaa saa Yorken kuulostamaan aika mykistävältä.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 11 – Falling DownOasis – TOP21-biisit: 11 – Falling Down

From the album Dig Out Your Soul (2008).

Yield from the band’s last album Dig Out Your Soul. A great track sang by Noel based on a deviant drum beat.

If this was stripped down to just acoustic guitar and vocals this would be a traditional Oasis song. With this album arrangement there’s however some flavours of Coldplay. In the year 2008 Viva la Vida was pretty much the direction into which pop-rock was going.

In the last records Noel sang in a nice sound and this one makes no exception. The text is also one of the strongest ones from the 00s. The feel is kinda ”blue”.

“The summer sun, it blows my mind
Is falling down on all that I’ve ever known
Time will kiss the world goodbye
Falling down on all that I’ve ever known
Is all that I’ve ever known

A dying scream makes no sound
Calling out to all that I’ve ever known
Here am I, lost and found
Calling out to all

We live a dying dream
If you know what I mean
All that I’ve ever known
It’s all that I’ve ever known

Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly
I cried the rain that fills the ocean wide
I tried to talk with God to no avail
Calling Him in and out of nowhere
Said: “If You won’t save me, please don’t waste my time”

Viimeisen Dig Out Your Soul-levyn satoa. Noelin laulama hieno raita, jonka pohjana toimii poikkeava rumpukomppi.

Tunnelma on aika ”blue”.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 12 – WhateverOasis – TOP21-biisit: 12 – Whatever

From the single ”Whatever” (1994).

This interesting piece of music was released in between the first two records. The song has clearly hit potential but it was left (like many B-sides at the time) to dimmer lights by the band.

”Whatever” has emanation from Definitely Maybe but the band plays like on (What’s the Story) Morning Glory. The way the string section and piano are arranged are enjoyably sighing towards the 60s and traditional pop. Liam sings in a natural way while Noel is filling in with his Les Paul.

The C-section is great here. Especially the strokes in the part ”and you know it’s no fun”. Whatever has almost a happy and light feel to be an Oasis-song. The distorted guitars are conspicuous by they’re absence.

“I’m free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I’ll sing the blues if I want

I’m free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it’s wrong or right it’s alright

Always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long’s it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don’t cost much ”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHfx9LXzxpwSingleltä Whatever (1994).

Kahden ensimmäisen levyn välissä julkaistu Whatever on mielenkiintoinen tapaus. Selkeää hittiainesta, mutta bändi jätti (niinkuin monet singlejulkaisujen B-puoletkin) himmeämpiin valoihin.

Whateverissa on Definitely Mayben uhoa, mutta soitto kuulostaa (What’s the Story) Morning Glorylta. Liam laulaa aika luonnollisella soundilla Noelin fillaillessa Les Paul-fillejä.

C-osa on tässä mainio ja erityisesti sen lopulla tulevat iskut kohdassa “and you know it’s no fun”.

“I’m free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I’ll sing the blues if I want

I’m free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it’s wrong or right it’s alright
