Oasis – TOP21-songs: 3 – SupersonicOasis – TOP21-biisit: 3 – Supersonic

From the album Definitely Maybe (1994).

A debut single this great is a rare possession. Noel has claimed that he wrote this song very quickly. The legend also tells that when the band had recorded Supersonic they went driving around Manchester listening the song from a cassette and admire how good a song they had produced.

The moment when this song struck has been also clearly stayed in my memory: driving a bike around Lieksa in the summer of 2006. Just before Lamminkylä’s school, in the middle of fields, I first time listened this until the chorus. Until that I had ignored this song as intoxicated, neutral clumping. But after listening to the refrain for the first time there was no going back.

The verse has the self-confidence, the refrain has the melody. This is Oasis in a nutshell. Gem Archer has said that Supersonic’s trick is that it’s just slightly too slow. Just like Liam prancing in his usual manner… The guitar plays catchy melodies in both intro and interludes and when played live the outro also streched a bit longer with Noel riffing his heart out.

Supersonic was a live favourite from the start until the end although it had it’s moments out of the setlist. During the last tour it rose in almost a renessance and sounded better than ever in the 00s. Sadly then happened what happened…

What’s this song about? That’s left for every listener’s own imagination. What a great song. “You need to find a way for what you wanna say / but before tomorrow / ’cause my friend said he’d take you home / he sits in a corner all alone / he lives under a waterfall / nobody can see him / nobody can ever hear him call”.

I need to be myself
I can’t be no one else
I’m feeling supersonic
Give me gin and tonic
You can have it all but how much do you want it?
You make me laugh
Give me your autograph
Can I ride with you in your B.M.W?
You can sail with me in my yellow submarine

You need to find out
’Cos no one’s gonna tell you what I’m on about
You need to find a way for what you want to say
But before tomorrow

’Cos my friend said he’d take you home
He sits in a corner all alone
He lives under a waterfall
Nobody can see him
Nobody can ever hear him call

You need to be yourself
You can’t be no one else
I know a girl called Elsa
She’s into Alka Seltzer
She sniffs it through a cane on a supersonic train
She made me laugh
I got her autograph
She done it with a doctor on a helicopter
She’s sniffin in her tissue
Sellin’ the Big Issue

She needs to find out
’Cos no one’s gonna tell you what I’m on about
She needs to find a way for what she wants to say
But before tomorrow

’Cos my friend said he’d take you home
He sits in a corner all alone
He lives under a waterfall
Nobody can see him
Nobody can ever hear him call”

Albumilta Definitely Maybe (1994).

Debyyttisingle, jollaista harvalla bändillä on. Noel on todennut kirjoittaneensa tämän todella nopeasti.

Säkeistössä on uhoa, kertosäkeessä melodia.

Onpa taas mahtava biisi. “You need to find a way for what you wanna say / but before tomorrow / ’cause my friend said he’d take you home / he sits in a corner all alone / he lives under a waterfall / nobody can see him / nobody can ever hear him call”.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 4 – Don’t Look Back in AngerOasis – TOP21-biisit: 4 – Don’t Look Back in Anger

From the album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995).

A mega ballad sang by Noel himself. The first listen of this one is clearly in mind as well: it occurred during the same trip than with Acquiesce, which placed on number 6. (What’s the Story) Morning Glory-album was played first and this song came out of the player just as we were leaving Lieksa. The melody of the refrain struck me immediately.

Noel said in an interview once that he tried to compose refrains that a stadium-full of people could sing along. This one’s just like that but there’s great things surrounding that as well. The lyrics are written about a break-up but from a different point-of-view than usually.

“So Sally can wait
she knows it’s too late
as we’re walking on by
her soul slides away,
”but don’t look back in anger”
I heard you say”

Also the b-section (meaning the part inbetween the verse and the chorus) deserves a mention. This is how a song builds it’s tension! Especially it’s last few measures are great. And the text ain’t bad there either.

“So I’ll start the revolution from my bed
Cos you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside ’coz summertime’s in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out”

Also the outro is great. The story ends, a little surprisingly, with something like an epilogue, raising the songs classic-status further.

This is a song from which I have to share a live version from which Don’t Look Back in Anger’s power can be experienced. In their home city Manchester there used to be quite a party everytime when their own boys came to town.

Albumilta (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995).

Megaballadi, jonka Noel tulkitsee.

“So Sally can wait
she knows it’s too late
as we’re walking on by
her soul slides away,
”but don’t look back in anger”
I heard you say”

So I’ll start the revolution from my bed
Cos you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside ’coz summertime’s in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out”

Myös loppu on mahtava. Tarina loppuukin hieman yllättävästi kuin epilogilla, nostaen klassikko-statusta entisestään.

Tästä täytyy laittaa jakoon live-versio, jossa biisin mahti tulee esille. Kotikentällä Manchesterissa tuppasi aina olemaan melkoiset pirskeet, kun omat pojat saapuivat kaupunkiin.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 5 – Live ForeverOasis – TOP21-biisit: 5 – Live Forever

From the album Definitely Maybe (1994).

Because Nirvana said “I Hate Myself and I Wanna Die” Noel countered with Live Forever. This is a great example of what separated Oasis from many of it’s coevals. Live Forever’s lyric is a masterpiece.

The drum beat starting the song off has became quite a trademark and the song in it’s entity is pretty dramatic especially considering that it recycles the same chord progression excluding the outro. Noel gets to solo in his own manner and note selections.

There’s no need to write a lot about this song. Some pieces speak for themselves.

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now’s the time to find out why
I think you’re the same as me
We see things they’ll never see
You and I are gonna live forever”

Albumilta Definitely Maybe (1994).

Kun kerran Nirvanalla oli “I Hate Myself and I Wanna Die”, niin Noel iski vastaiskuksi Live Foreverin. Aika merkittävä ero siinä, mikä erotti Oasiksen monista aikalaisistaan… Teksti on täyttä helmeä.

Alun rumpukompista on muodostunut melkoinen trademark, ja koko biisi on aika dramaattinen ottaen huomioon, että periaatteessa se kierrättää samaa sointukiertoa outroa lukuun ottamatta. Noel pääsee sooloilemaan tyylilleen ominaisen melodisesti.

Eipä tästä ihmeitä tarvitse kirjoittaa. Jotkin laulut puhuvat puolestaan.

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now’s the time to find out why
I think you’re the same as me
We see things they’ll never see
You and I are gonna live forever”

Cynic is like the meat, which must be brewed a really long time, before you can eat it.

Musically it’s like a taste identification-competition of cooking programs. You need many, many samples, before you can say from what the soup consist of. At a quick look, it looks easy prog metal, but in the end it’s like a bouillabaisse soup, which consists of many different ingredients. Even the influences floating in pretty strong metal sauce, there can be found elements of pop, ambient and indie hippie music.

The album isn’t mixed usually in any way. Sean Malone’s fretless bass are very strongly represented. Paul Masvidal’s vocals sound like there’s three voice layers all the time. And, of course there could be. Sean Reinert’s drums are panned in a funny way, like there’s a very strong treble and very low bass frequencies. Fretless bass and guitar take care of that middle sector. Some pro may say that my analysis is very weak, but that’s what it sounds like.

”Supernatural bass trickery makes the album also interesting.”

The melodies are original. They could work up even in the Flow Festival, if stripped down. Sometimes supernatural bass trickery takes too much from the good melodies. This makes the album also interesting. It is a little stranger spice, which requires getting used to.

If you need new dish, which won’t get you bored, then this is for you.

THE BEST MOMENTS
Infinite Shapes Despite the boring and abstract title, this is the most humming song of the album.

NOT SO BRILLIANT
Holy Fallout – The background of the chorus is too confusing even for me.

PARHAAT HETKET
Infinite Shapes Tylsähköstä ja abstraktista nimestään huolimatta levyn eniten hyräiltävä kappale.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 6 – AcquiesceOasis – TOP21-biisit: 6 – Acquiesce

Originally released as a B-side to Some Might Say (1995). Can be found on the album The Masterplan (1998).

This song’s one of the first conceptions of this band. It was the beginning of the summer of 2006 and I was driving with my brother Ilkka towards Uimaharju and a small-scale sports-day (meaning playing some tennis and maybe doing some track & field). Just when we came to Uimaharju’s roundabout we put The Masterplan to CD-drive. That album starts with Acquiesce.

The song’s lyrics were about things that a boy who just had got to mature age of 14 had never heard anyone sing about. Neither had any band sounded like Oasis on this song.

Both of the Gallagher-brothers sing in this one (that’s rare!) because Noel claims Liam was in a bar during the recording of the refrains. However, the alternation gives this song a certain dimension.

“I don’t know what it is
That makes me feel alive
I don’t know how to wake
The things that sleep inside
I only wanna see the light
That shines behind your eyes

I hope that I can say
The things I wish I’d said
To sing my soul to sleep
And take me back to bed
You want to be alone
When we could be alive instead

Because we need each other
We believe in one another
And I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
Because we need each other
We believe in one another
(And) I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
What’s sleepin’ in our soul

There are many things
That I would like to know
And there are many places
That I wish to go
But everything’s depending
On the way the wind may blow
I don’t know what it is
That makes me feel alive
I don’t know how to wake
The things that sleep inside
I only wanna see the light
That shines behind your eyes

Because we need each other
We believe in one another
And I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
Because we need each other
We believe in one another
(And) I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
What’s sleepin’ in our soul”

Juuri Uimaharjun kiertoliittymän kohdalla iskettiin soimaan The Masterplan, jonka avausbiisinä on Acquiesce.

“I don’t know what it is
That makes me feel alive
I don’t know how to wake
The things that sleep inside
