Oasis – TOP21-songs: 1 – WonderwallOasis – TOP21-biisit: 1 – Wonderwall

From the album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995).

The first place goes to Wonderwall. I already mentioned in the review of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? that from the first listen this has been “the third-best song of all time”. However, the first two I’m not sure of yet. The first time with this song is clearly in mind as well: it was the previous day of the previously mentioned Uimaharju-trip, (WTS)MG?-album playing in the car, Wonderwall started playing just when we were driving home from athletics field next to Lieksa’s library…

This is once again Noel’s words and music which Liam interprets beautifully (and it’s rare to say that about Liam’s singing). The string arrangement is great and piano comes in at the end to play a simple but effective melody.

There’s no electric guitar wall, just acoustic ones accompanying: the other one’s strumming while the other plucks a pretty line that can be especially heard in “and all the roads we have to walk”-kohdassa. Here’s also the typical Oasis-chords: left hand’s pinkie and ring finger stay in place and the other fingers change place in the key of E-minor, forming the chords for this song: Em7, G, Dsus4, A7sus4, Cadd9. In this song there’s capo on the 2nd fret.

Tuo sointukierto onkin vallan uniikki ollakseen niin klassinen. Green Day lainasi sitä Boulevard of Broken Dreamsiin ja Noel meinasi kimpaantua…

That chord progression is pretty unique to be so classic. Green Day borrowed it to Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Noel almost flared up… The man just stated that he has stolen wittingly but has always paid his refunds.

What rises this up above the others are the personal vibes. As a song this is as strong as (almost weaker) than The Masterplan, but with Wonderwall comes in mind so many people and memories that this can’t be ignored. A classic song and not without reason.

I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now”. One of the best lines ever in any song.

Today is gonna be the day
That they’re gonna throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

Back beat, the word is on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I’m sure you’ve heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don’t believe that anybody feels
The way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would
Like to say to you
But I don’t know how

Because maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You’re my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day
But they’ll never throw it back to you
By now you should’ve somehow
Realized what you’re not to do
I don’t believe that anybody
Feels the way I do
About you now

And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don’t know how

I said maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You’re my wonderwall

I said maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You’re my wonderwall

I said maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
You’re gonna be the one that saves me “

Albumilta (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995).

Sähkökitaravalli on riisuttu ja akustiset säestävät: toinen strummailee, toinen näppäilee nättiä linjaa joka kuuluu erityisesti “and all the roads we have to walk”-kohdassa. Tässä on sointukierrolle ominaista nuo ns. “oasis-soinnut”: vasemman käden pikkurilli ja nimetön paikoillaan ja muut sormet vaihtavat paikkaa E-molli-sävellajissa, eli tulee tässäkin biisissä kuultavat Em7, G, Dsus4, A7sus4 ja Cadd9. Tätä soittaessa pitää tosin olla capo 2. välissä.

Tuo sointukierto onkin vallan uniikki ollakseen niin klassinen. Green Day lainasi sitä Boulevard of Broken Dreamsiin ja Noel meinasi kimpaantua…

Teksti on kaunis rakkauslaulu.

I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now”. Yksi hienoimmista riveistä missään biisissä.

Today is gonna be the day

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 3 – SupersonicOasis – TOP21-biisit: 3 – Supersonic

From the album Definitely Maybe (1994).

A debut single this great is a rare possession. Noel has claimed that he wrote this song very quickly. The legend also tells that when the band had recorded Supersonic they went driving around Manchester listening the song from a cassette and admire how good a song they had produced.

The moment when this song struck has been also clearly stayed in my memory: driving a bike around Lieksa in the summer of 2006. Just before Lamminkylä’s school, in the middle of fields, I first time listened this until the chorus. Until that I had ignored this song as intoxicated, neutral clumping. But after listening to the refrain for the first time there was no going back.

The verse has the self-confidence, the refrain has the melody. This is Oasis in a nutshell. Gem Archer has said that Supersonic’s trick is that it’s just slightly too slow. Just like Liam prancing in his usual manner… The guitar plays catchy melodies in both intro and interludes and when played live the outro also streched a bit longer with Noel riffing his heart out.

Supersonic was a live favourite from the start until the end although it had it’s moments out of the setlist. During the last tour it rose in almost a renessance and sounded better than ever in the 00s. Sadly then happened what happened…

What’s this song about? That’s left for every listener’s own imagination. What a great song. “You need to find a way for what you wanna say / but before tomorrow / ’cause my friend said he’d take you home / he sits in a corner all alone / he lives under a waterfall / nobody can see him / nobody can ever hear him call”.

I need to be myself
I can’t be no one else
I’m feeling supersonic
Give me gin and tonic
You can have it all but how much do you want it?
You make me laugh
Give me your autograph
Can I ride with you in your B.M.W?
You can sail with me in my yellow submarine

You need to find out
’Cos no one’s gonna tell you what I’m on about
You need to find a way for what you want to say
But before tomorrow

’Cos my friend said he’d take you home
He sits in a corner all alone
He lives under a waterfall
Nobody can see him
Nobody can ever hear him call

You need to be yourself
You can’t be no one else
I know a girl called Elsa
She’s into Alka Seltzer
She sniffs it through a cane on a supersonic train
She made me laugh
I got her autograph
She done it with a doctor on a helicopter
She’s sniffin in her tissue
Sellin’ the Big Issue

She needs to find out
’Cos no one’s gonna tell you what I’m on about
She needs to find a way for what she wants to say
But before tomorrow

’Cos my friend said he’d take you home
He sits in a corner all alone
He lives under a waterfall

Albumilta Definitely Maybe (1994).

Debyyttisingle, jollaista harvalla bändillä on. Noel on todennut kirjoittaneensa tämän todella nopeasti.

Säkeistössä on uhoa, kertosäkeessä melodia.

Onpa taas mahtava biisi. “You need to find a way for what you wanna say / but before tomorrow / ’cause my friend said he’d take you home / he sits in a corner all alone / he lives under a waterfall / nobody can see him / nobody can ever hear him call”.

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 5 – Live ForeverOasis – TOP21-biisit: 5 – Live Forever

From the album Definitely Maybe (1994).

Because Nirvana said “I Hate Myself and I Wanna Die” Noel countered with Live Forever. This is a great example of what separated Oasis from many of it’s coevals. Live Forever’s lyric is a masterpiece.

The drum beat starting the song off has became quite a trademark and the song in it’s entity is pretty dramatic especially considering that it recycles the same chord progression excluding the outro. Noel gets to solo in his own manner and note selections.

There’s no need to write a lot about this song. Some pieces speak for themselves.

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now’s the time to find out why
I think you’re the same as me
We see things they’ll never see
You and I are gonna live forever”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYJ7pjfNcpc

Albumilta Definitely Maybe (1994).

Kun kerran Nirvanalla oli “I Hate Myself and I Wanna Die”, niin Noel iski vastaiskuksi Live Foreverin. Aika merkittävä ero siinä, mikä erotti Oasiksen monista aikalaisistaan… Teksti on täyttä helmeä.

Alun rumpukompista on muodostunut melkoinen trademark, ja koko biisi on aika dramaattinen ottaen huomioon, että periaatteessa se kierrättää samaa sointukiertoa outroa lukuun ottamatta. Noel pääsee sooloilemaan tyylilleen ominaisen melodisesti.

Eipä tästä ihmeitä tarvitse kirjoittaa. Jotkin laulut puhuvat puolestaan.

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now’s the time to find out why
I think you’re the same as me
We see things they’ll never see

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 6 – AcquiesceOasis – TOP21-biisit: 6 – Acquiesce

Originally released as a B-side to Some Might Say (1995). Can be found on the album The Masterplan (1998).

This song’s one of the first conceptions of this band. It was the beginning of the summer of 2006 and I was driving with my brother Ilkka towards Uimaharju and a small-scale sports-day (meaning playing some tennis and maybe doing some track & field). Just when we came to Uimaharju’s roundabout we put The Masterplan to CD-drive. That album starts with Acquiesce.

The song’s lyrics were about things that a boy who just had got to mature age of 14 had never heard anyone sing about. Neither had any band sounded like Oasis on this song.

Both of the Gallagher-brothers sing in this one (that’s rare!) because Noel claims Liam was in a bar during the recording of the refrains. However, the alternation gives this song a certain dimension.

“I don’t know what it is
That makes me feel alive
I don’t know how to wake
The things that sleep inside
I only wanna see the light
That shines behind your eyes

I hope that I can say
The things I wish I’d said
To sing my soul to sleep
And take me back to bed
You want to be alone
When we could be alive instead

Because we need each other
We believe in one another
And I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
Because we need each other
We believe in one another
(And) I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul
What’s sleepin’ in our soul

There are many things
That I would like to know
And there are many places
That I wish to go
But everything’s depending
On the way the wind may blow
I don’t know what it is
That makes me feel alive
I don’t know how to wake
The things that sleep inside
I only wanna see the light
That shines behind your eyes

Because we need each other
We believe in one another
And I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul

(And) I know we’re going to uncover
What’s sleepin’ in our soul

Juuri Uimaharjun kiertoliittymän kohdalla iskettiin soimaan The Masterplan, jonka avausbiisinä on Acquiesce.

“I don’t know what it is

Oasis – TOP21-songs: 7 – Cigarettes & AlcoholOasis – TOP21-biisit: 7 – Cigarettes & Alcohol

From the album Definitely Maybe (1994).

“You can wait for a lifetime / to spend your days in the sunshine / you might as well do the white line / ‘cause when it comes on top / YOU GOTTA MAKE IT HAPPEN!”

Top-seiska onkin sitten pelkkää mahtavuutta käynnistyen ensilevyn rokilla.

Top7 is pure greatness starting with rock’n’roll from the debut album.

”Is it my imagination or have I finally found something worth living for / I was looking for some action but all I found was cigarettes and alcohol”. At it’s simplicity the ambigous opening line is rock-poetry at it’s best. When the package is flavoured with young men playing presumptously and, most of all, Liam’s vocal performance (which rumbles!) we’ve got a magnificent song in our hands.

Alun kitarariffissä lainataan surutta T. Rexin Get it Onia eikä sävellys muutenkaan mitään progea ole: kolmea sointua vähän järjestystä muutellen. Tästä on rokkenrollissa kyse!

The opening guitar riff borrows recklessly from T. Rex’s Get it On and the composition isn’t proge otherwise: just three chords slightly trading places at times. This is what rock’n’roll is about!

The album version can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojgg0Bnyg54

Personally I prefer the version played on Wembley Stadium in 2000 when both Gallagher brothers get to act like rock stars in a magnificent way. The highlight is the moment after 1 minute and 40 seconds, when Noel jumps on top of the speakers, starts the song’s opening riff and 80 000 people go nuts. Liam’s adrenaline boost shows at 5 minute mark, when the man whips his tambourine to the microphone after finishing his singing. And adding some Whole Lotta Love in the outro isn’t bad either. A great, rocking song!

Yksinkertaisuudessaan monitulkinnallinen avausrivi on jo rock-runoutta parhaimmillaan.
